Nursing Cover/Hooter Hider

***edited to add*** I feel like I was a little unclear with my directions, so hopefully some new pics make it a little easier to understand.

{I know!! Miracle of miracles!!! I'm actually posting again. But I wouldn't count on very many posts. I'm just WAY too busy to keep up my crafting obsession AND blog about it. Some of my friends have asked how I make nursing covers, so I thought I'd give some photos about how I do it.} For those not familiar with nursing covers, this is one of the original designs that my pattern is based on. The pattern is fairly simple, it is a rectangle of fabric around 28 inches by 37 inches before hemming. It had boning at the top and straps like an apron to put around your neck. and in case you don't know what boning is, it usually looks something like this: The only hard part is putting boning in the top of the rectangle. This is what gives you the ability to look down on your baby while staying covered.

First, do a rolled hem around the 4 sides of fabric.

Depending on how thick the boning is, I'll make the hem wide enough for the top of the nursing cover.

Here's the top of the nursing cover, the boning is the white stiff curled thing above the fabric in this photo.Then next step is centering the boning at the top of the fabric. Here's the makeshift way I've come up with how to do this. I cut the boning between 12-18 inches. Then I fold the fabric in half and fold my boning in half. Then I line up the boning middle with the fabric middle to center it. and pin where the end is. Sew a line at the pin to make the boning "stay put". Unpick part of the hem you have already sewed so you can put the boning in. Stuff in the boning until the end of it is touching the line you sewed. When it's all the way in, sew another line to keep in in place. Sorry there aren't any more pictures, but then I just make a strap like any apron and attach it on either side of the boning. (I typically use D-rings like most aprons.) Voila!

All about the Berries...

Strawberries that is! This week, I wanted to post about some yummy treats my friend April and I made last week. After going strawberry picking at a farm, we made some yummy stuff with those berries...and everything we did was REALLY easy to do. The first thing was to do chocolate dipped strawberries. All you do is put a bunch of chocolate chips (we used milk chocolate) into a bowl and microwave it. Make sure that you keep checking the chocolate and stirring it. Stirring will help to melt the chocolate. If you keep it in the microwave too long, the chocolate could burn, so be sure to keep taking it out and stirring to check if it needs to be in there longer. Here is the fruit of our labors: (oh, and we did some coconut covered marshmallows, pretzels, and an assortment of nuts)The other thing we tried with strawberries was drying slices and fruit leather. Yum! The only thing you really need is a dehydrator, and if you're anything like me you can find a kindly neighbor to let you borrow one (thanks Alexis!!) or pick one up for relatively cheaply (Alexis said she saw a cheap one for about $35). Really all you do is wash, hull, and slice the berries to dry the slices. For the fruit leather, I used the ratio of 2 cups whole strawberries to 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce. You just spread the mixture onto the solid removable rack that comes with the dehydrator and turn it on. That easy!! For both dried strawberries and fruit leather, I think I let them dehydrate for about 10-12 hours. Hope you can try some fun things with strawberries too this year. I also love to do freezer jam and stock up for the year around this time. Let me know what else YOU do with strawberries! I'd love to hear.

Journaling: Here’s Sol doing what he loves best-finding the book shelf and pulling books down. He loves finding small books and playing with them. Here he found a Japanese hymn book. Somehow books just taste to yummy to him. The bookcase is probably the first thing Sol started to pull himself up on. All those books are just such an incentive to climb up. For their last dance together (Senior Prom!) they posed before their dates showed up. they really make high school look easy even through all the drama they have had. Both Chelsea and Camie loved their dresses. Camie of course chose something very pink and girly while Chelsea tried to look like a Grecian goddess in her white gown. They seriously have too much fun with each other. who knew that they would eventually get along with each other after all the many fights over the years? I just finished one of my first digi/paper scrap hybrid projects. I am sooo excited about it!! Mostly because it was made for a friend of mine, who doesn't know I'm making it. So, I will be taking pictures and posting them soon so you can see what I made and WHO I made it for! I'm so happy it's finally done. Don't you just feel so nice when you finish a project and it turns out to be half as good as you hoped it would? I'm just glad it's another thing that can be checked off my mental "to scrap" list. Now what else do I need to do?...

Gardening and Such

For this week, I decided to plant some lovely herbs that I got on clearance at the local grocery store. It's pretty cool because they came in their own little plastic greenhouse. The herbs I planted were basil, chives, and parsley.

I'll keep you updated on how this goes. I HOPE it works!! I really do not have the green thumb in the family. That belongs to my hubby. Here are his plants that he has kept alive and thriving for round about 2 years now!

We've also been putting together a little garden in our backyard. Since we can't actually plant things in the ground, we've got to put them into pots. The one good thing about this is that if it gets cold, it's VERY easy to transport them inside! We've got 3 pots of tomato plants, 3 zucchinis, and 1 very cute pot of strawberries. We're even starting to get a strawberry that is turning red. Thankfully, Johnny usually takes care of the garden outside, and since we are NOT in Utah, it actually rains here! which means that taking care of the garden is a little less maintenance. Oh look, it's raining right now. Good thing I already took these pics today. It's pouring out there.

Oh, and here' a little look at our backyard from our back door. I LOVE how green it is!!

thanks so much for the advice. I will be using the white flower. I would make apologies for not posting for a while, but I'm not sure anyone even really pays attention, so I'm not that worried. For this week's new project, here some LO's i did a little while ago. i pulled some pictures from out of the vault (i.e., old shoe box) and decided to paper scrap them. I have got so *much* paper scrap stuff that i really want to use it. It seems like now that all my pics are digital, it's just that much easier to scrap them digitally, so that's where my leanings are. But, I don't want to waste all the cool stuff i've gotten over the years that I really love. so, here are 2 paper lo's. they both have to do with bands I've been in over the years. one is of lemon-ade, a band I was in with Johnny and our friend Mark Sanderson. The other one is of when I went to Nauvoo with my bluegrass band and we decided to build a raft out of driftwood along the Mississippi River just like Huck Finn. (hence the title: {playing} huck finn) hope you enjoy! i really liked doing these lo's.

I actually did have this put together to post last night, but then our internet went haywire! blah! Don't you hate when that happens? Anyway, the craft I wanted to post about was a baby wipe and diaper carrier. (think diapees & wipees) Last week I made one for my friend's baby shower. She is in love with purple, so that what I did. This one, however, is a little different. I added some lace and want to put a flower on it. But I'm having a hard time deciding which flower to do. Which one do you like better? The white or the burgundy flower? Please leave a comment and help me decide!!

New Craft Tuesday

I've decided that on every Tuesday I'm going to feature some kind of craft that I'm working on. I'm making it a goal for it to be something new, but I'm sure there will be days that it will have to feature some things that I've done in the recent past. Well, here goes for the first edition. Today I spent the better part of the day sewing. I started out by making an apron out of some REALLY cute fabric. This is the item that I listed on my new Etsy store. Sol went down for a nap, so I started another apron. This one has a red base with a red/brown/yellow print fabric. I'll put up some pics when I finish it. Then I went shopping for a friend's baby shower. She is really into purple and is having her first girl after having 3 boys! So I picked up some purple fabrics and made a nursing cover and a "diapees and wipees" bag. I was really happy with how they both turned out, but I forgot to take a picture. Oops. Next time. So that's it for this edition. Until next Tuesday!

Ikea!!

Last weekend we headed to the grand opening of Ikea. Talk about a headache! But we got some really cool stuff. Here's a peek into some of the stash we got: I love these square frames. I actually didn't really care about the prints in the frames until we got them home and into Sol's room. The prints match some of the decor in his room perfectly! My ulterior motive the whole time was to get some square frames to print out some digital LO's to put in his room. I love these white frames, the only issue I have with them is that they are an odd size (i think about 9x9), so I'll have to be creative in printing. ($14.99 for set of 3 pictures) We got these cool hangy things to put in our living room for Sol's toys. (don't worry, it'll be mostly covered by a shrunk we got from my parents from Germany.) I just like the idea of having a place for Sol's toys that is easy for him to put away and easy to get at. We got the white one. I was wishing they'd have a light blue or brown one to match our living room a little better, but it's still good. ($4.99) Which brings us to our third item...these bibs! I really like them because they cover up Sol's arms. This is great when daddy's already dressed Sol in his Sunday clothes and Sol hasn't had breakfast yet. It has the pouch sticking out to catch food, but I don't know if it's because Sol is still so small, but it doesn't really work. They covering the arms thing makes it worth it though. ($3.99 for 2) And finally, we bought a mirror for Sol's changing table. I've honestly been meaning to do this forever. My uncle suggested putting one up so that Sol would have something to focus on other than rolling off when he gets his diaper changed. The mirror that we got is just plain unstained light wood. So, stay tuned for what I did to make this mirror match Sol's room. (I'll give you a hint-it's got to do with modge-podge and cowboys!) I hopefully will take more pics of Sol's room too. I don't think I've really got any up and I'm so happy with how it turned out. ($6.99)

Making a Pouch Sling

Here's a few pictures of a pouch sling I made. The funny thing is that it's made from leftover fabric I had from making my kitchen curtains. I have a lot more detailed pics and instructions if anybody is interested in hearing about it, leave me a comment and I'll walk you through measuring and making this sling. I love it! Journaling: You were less than one month old in this picture. It was so sweet to watch you sleep in your daddy’s arms. I can’t believe how you could just sleep anywhere! Now you like to be wrapped up tight in your blanket in your crib with two silkie blankets next to your face. It took you a while to sleep through the night, but just 2 nights ago, you slept 14 hours straight! Keep it up sweetie pie!

Love Affair with a Water Bottle

One of the great reasons I LOVE blogging is that it makes my scrapping so much easier. I took the journaling for this page from a blog entry on our family blog. How easy is that? Also, I love that I can use my blog as a family journal of what's happening in our lives. First time ever that I've been consistent with journal keeping! Anyway, here's the latest LO. This page documents Sol's fun adventures chasing a water bottle around. The journaling says: "Lately Sol has had a lot of new tricks. I've LOVED them! He's starting to scoot around and it's just too darn cute. One of his favorite things to chase? Empty water bottles. The problem with water bottles is that as soon as you touch them, they roll away from you. This little guy is tenacious! He chased this water bottle all over our living room. He'll get almost close enough to touch it, roll to his back, do a little scoot, roll back over, and try to reach it again. It's so comical to watch." It also says on the right side: "and when I catch it? i look at it... i eat it... i give it loves"

More Modge Podge!

My friend Jenny and I got together to do some modge podge yesterday. She worked on some cute wooden letters that spelled "Faith" and I worked on a cigar box for Sol's room to match some lettering of his name that I'd already done. I mostly used the "Wanted" collection from Cosmo Cricket. I LOVE IT!! Let me know what you think!

Modge Podge Letters

These are some letters that I modge podged of our last name. I couldn't get a really good shot of the "H" because the flash kept making a weird reflection on it. Sorry! These were wooden letters that I got from WalMart. I used a variety of papers (I can't remember all of which kind right now-I did this over a year ago) along with buttons, flowers, stickers, rhinestones, and ribbons. I'll post the one I did of Sol's name soon.

Flower Arrangment

I know, I know...this is basically the same picture, but the reason I included both is because of the perspective. From the first picture, you are looking into my kitchen and from the second one, into the dining room (see those curtains?) I saw these flowers and fell in love with them. They are silk poppy flowers and gerber daisies. I had a time trying to figure out what to do with them, so I found a long vase and filled it with black sand to match my kitchen. (my kitchen colors are black, red, and yellow) Now I'm thinking I should have taken a picture from above so you can actually see the view of the flowers. Whoops...maybe I'll add it later.

My Curtains

One of the first things I did when we actually moved into a house (albeit a townhouse) was to figure out what I wanted to do for window dressings. This was the first time I actually had windows to cover!! So exciting! For my dining room, made this valance. I still have some leftover fabric, so I'm thinking about doing seat cushion covers (in all my spare time hahah!). I didn't realize what a huge undertaking it would be to do these curtains. I like to sew, but I'm not a guru by any means. It took me forever to figure out how to do the ribbing and to make the holders for the tassels. Very fun though. I just hope it fits the windows for future places I'll be living!
